If you encrypt on the router, you need a really fast (powerful CPU) router. The new Linksys WRT1900AC is the fastest avail, with stock speed listed as 1.2 Ghz, but no third-part firmware yet, the R7000 is second in line, with 1Ghz stock speed. The Asus AC68U has 800 Mhz.

Depending on how you configure the router, some of these settings may actually affect the performance in other areas. The R7000 had worked great for years, but apparently stopped when I hit a certain tipping point with GH devices. A thread on the Netgear forum from a couple of months ago discussed this problem, and the only real solution found by anyone was getting a new, non-Netgear router. I'm tempted to get bail on the R7000 and pick up a Google Wifi 3-pack.
In general, I don't believe in silver bullets, but the NETGEAR - Nighthawk AC2300 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 5 Router is a true superhero, literally faster (not sure) than a speeding bullet, with connectivity stronger than The Man of Steel himself. Setup was a breeze.
